Two Words

Two words.  Game 7.  The greatest two words in sports.

How ‘bout some numbers?

GSW:  101

HOU:  92

The Golden State Warriors eliminated the Houston Rockets 101-92 in Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals.  There are many words to describe what happened.  Hot and cold.  Destiny and inevitability.  Clutch and choke.  Relief and heartbreak.  Love and hate.  Individual and group.  Movement and stagnation.  Up and down.  Make and miss.  Success and failure.

There are even more numbers to explain how it all went down.

1st Quarter:  HOU 24   GSW 19

James Harden came out and scored 14 points on 4-6 shooting.  PJ Tucker  and Clint Capela had 3 rebounds each and combined for 5 points.  Eric Gordon scored the other 5 points for the Rockets.

Kevin Durant put up 8 points on 5 shots but the real story for the Warriors was Klay Thompson's 3 fouls in 4 minutes.

2nd Quarter:   HOU 30   GSW 24

The Rockets outscored the Dubs by 6.  PJ Tucker ended the 1st half with 7 points, going 3-6 with a solid 6 rebounds.  Capela has 14 points and 6 rebounds on 7-8 from the floor.  Gordon put up 9 points in the quarter and ended the half with 14 points, 1 rebound and 4 assists.  Harden was 1-9 in the 2nd quarter and had 16 points on 5-15 shooting in the 1st half.

The Warriors got 11 points on 4-7 from Thompson in the 2nd quarter.  Durant finished the 1st half with 13 points on 4-9 shooting including 3-6 on 3 pointers, while Steph Curry had a total of 8 points on 3-10 shooting at halftime.

The Rockets started the 2nd half up 54-43.  And then, as I have said after every game in this series, the 3rd quarter happened:

3rd Quarter:  GSW 33  HOU 15

Curry had 14 points including 11 in a row.  KD had 10 points and a couple of blocks.  Klay didn’t even play in the 3rd.

The Rockets managed only 15 points and were 0-13 on 3 pointers in the quarter compared to the Warriors 7-12.

4th Quarter:   GSW 25  HOU 23

KD’s quarter. He had 11 points on 3 fg attempts. Forget the numbers in this Q, he just took over with clutch jumpers.  Klay came back and had 7, Steph added 5.

Harden went 5-7 scoring 10 points and Gordon had 5 but it wasn't enough.  The entire quarter was a back and forth battle and a sign of what this series could have been if not for such poor shooting that plagued both teams throughout.

All said, the Dubs got 27 points, 9 rebounds, 10 assists, 4 steals and a block from Curry.  KD had 34 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, a steal and 3 blocks.  Thompson finished with 19 points, 3 rebounds, an assist and 2 steals.

The Rockets got 32 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists, 4 steals and a block from Harden.  Gordon put up 23 points on 22 shots.  Clint Capela scored 20 points on 9-10 shooting.  Tucker was solid with 14 points, 12 rebounds, 2 assists and 4 steals.  Then there was Trevor Ariza.  He had zero points on 0-12 from the field including 0-9 on 3 pointers.

The big story as always was the 3rd Q.  Golden State was 7-12 on 3s and scored 33.  Houston was 5-25 on 3s and actually ended up missing 27 3s in a row.

Enough numbers.  I'll leave you with two words.
